Cheapest Petrol and Diesel on the Isle of Wight (2026)

Cheapest Petrol and Diesel on the Isle of Wight (2026)

Fuel on the Isle of Wight costs more than the mainland. That's not a rumour — it's a structural reality of island supply chains. But within the island, prices vary considerably, and knowing where to fill up can save you £3–8 per tank.

Why IoW Fuel Is More Expensive

Petrol and diesel reach the island via fuel tankers transported on ferries from the mainland. That ferry cost — plus the logistics of island-only distribution — adds to the wholesale cost at every pump on the island.

Typical premium over UK average:

  • Petrol: 8–15p/litre above UK average
  • Diesel: 6–12p/litre above UK average

The exact premium fluctuates with fuel prices generally. When mainland prices are high, island prices tend to be proportionally higher. When mainland prices fall, island reductions sometimes lag.

Cheapest Fuel Stations on the Island

Fuel prices change daily, but consistent patterns hold:

Supermarket forecourts (consistently cheapest):

Station Location Notes
Morrisons Newport Usually the cheapest petrol on the island
Co-op Newport Competitive, near town centre
Tesco Ryde Strong competition, well-priced

Supermarket forecourts use fuel as a footfall driver — they price competitively to attract drivers who will then shop inside. This works in your favour.

Mid-range:

Most independent garages in Newport, Cowes, and Sandown fall in the middle range — more expensive than supermarkets, less than rural stations.

Most expensive: Rural stations in Freshwater, Ventnor, and Bembridge have less competition and higher logistics costs. Expect to pay 5–8p/litre more than Newport supermarkets for the convenience of not driving across the island to fill up.

How to Track Live Prices

PetrolPrices.com and Zap-Map (for EV) both have Isle of Wight coverage. Search your postcode and filter by fuel type to see a price ranking for nearby stations updated by community users.

The comparison is most useful for planning: if you're already going to Newport for shopping, filling up at Morrisons at the same time makes obvious sense. It's less worth a 20-minute diversion to save 5p/litre.

How Much Does the Difference Actually Cost?

Scenario Cost at Cheapest Cost at Most Expensive Annual Difference
Small car (40L tank, fill weekly) ~£61 ~£65 ~£210/yr
Medium car (55L tank, fill weekly) ~£84 ~£90 ~£310/yr
Van (80L tank, fill weekly) ~£123 ~£132 ~£460/yr

Based on approximate 2026 IoW price range of £1.55–£1.68/litre for petrol.

These are annual figures comparing cheapest vs most expensive on the island — not vs mainland prices. The habit of using a cheaper station consistently adds up to a meaningful saving over a year.

Diesel vs Petrol vs Electric on the Isle of Wight

Petrol — Higher per-litre cost than diesel but lower car purchase price, no DPF issues with short IoW journeys, better for low-mileage drivers.

Diesel — More economical per mile at higher mileage, but DPF regeneration issues if you never leave the island. Diesel cars need regular longer runs at higher speed to burn off the DPF. Short IoW commutes in a diesel can lead to expensive DPF blockages.

Electric — Home charging costs approximately 15–22p/kWh (on a smart off-peak tariff like Octopus Go). That's equivalent to roughly 35–50p per mile for a typical EV, versus 12–15p per mile for a modern petrol car at 45mpg. Public charging on the island costs more — typically 45–75p/kWh. Electric makes most financial sense for IoW drivers who can charge at home.

IoW EV note: The island's public charging network has expanded significantly in 2025–2026. See EV charging on the Isle of Wight for the current picture.

Filling Up Before You Ferry

If you're making a mainland trip, it's worth filling up in Portsmouth, Southampton, or Lymington before boarding the return ferry. Mainland supermarket fuel is typically 8–15p cheaper per litre than the cheapest IoW options.

On a 50-litre fill: that's a £4–7.50 saving. Not enough to plan a special trip for, but worth doing when you're on the mainland anyway.
