Motorbikes for Sale on the Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight has some of the best motorcycling roads in the south of England. The Military Road along the south-west coast, the A3055 coastal route, and the country lanes through the interior offer a riding experience you simply don't get on the mainland. Low traffic, tight bends, varied terrain, and no motorways — it's a natural motorbike environment.

Buying locally avoids the ferry cost and gives you a bike from someone who's been using it on the same roads you'll be riding.

Licences: What Do You Need?

Before buying, make sure you're licensed for the bike you want.

CBT (Compulsory Basic Training): Required to ride on public roads. Allows you to ride a 125cc or less on L-plates without a full licence. Ideal for new riders — a CBT can be done on the island.

A1 licence: Full licence for motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW. Age 17+.

A2 licence: For bikes up to 35kW (47bhp). Age 19+. Covers the majority of mid-range bikes — 300–650cc class.

A licence (full): Unrestricted. Age 24+ (or 21+ if you've held A2 for 2 years).

If you're starting out, a 125cc learner legal bike is the right entry point. The island's roads are ideal for building confidence at this stage.

What to Look for in an Island Motorbike

Salt air corrosion: This is the big one. Any bike that's been stored near the coast will have been exposed to salt air. Check:

  • Exhaust headers and end cans for surface rust (cosmetic on steel, more serious on chrome)
  • Frame welds and joints for pitting
  • Spokes (if wire wheels) for corrosion at the hub and rim
  • Brake callipers for seizing
  • Chain, sprockets, and engine casings

Tyres: Check both tread depth and age. Tyres degrade over time even if unused — look for cracks in the sidewall. A tyre over 5 years old should be replaced regardless of tread depth.

Chain and sprockets: A worn chain and sprocket set is a common and cheap-to-ignore maintenance item. If the chain has significant slack that can't be adjusted out, or if the sprocket teeth are hooked rather than flat-topped, budget for replacement.

Service history: Oil changes are the most important item. An engine starved of regular oil changes at high mileage will show wear quickly. Look for oil change receipts or stamps.

Test ride: Always test ride before buying. Check for any vibration at specific revs, any clunking from the gearbox on upchanges, and any wobble from the front end over bumps.

Best Types of Bike for IoW Roads

Small to medium naked bikes (125–650cc): Perfect for the island's varied roads. Lightweight, manoeuvrable, and comfortable. Honda CB125R, Yamaha MT-07, Kawasaki Z650.

Adventure bikes: The A3055 coastal route and country lanes suit the upright riding position. Royal Enfield Himalayan or Honda CB500X are popular choices at accessible prices.

Classics and retro bikes: The island's vintage and classic bike scene is active. A well-maintained 1980s or 1990s Japanese classic — Honda CB, Yamaha XS, Kawasaki Z — suits the riding style perfectly. Check for rust and seized components.

Scooters: Practical for Newport commuters and town use. 50cc and 125cc scooters are ideal for L-plate riders. Honda PCX, Yamaha NMAX, and Piaggio MP3 are popular on the island.

Isle of Wight Motorcycle Events

The island hosts several motorcycle events through the year, most notably the IOW Motorcycle Festival — one of the largest motorcycle festivals in the UK, drawing tens of thousands of riders from the mainland. If you're planning to attend, buying your bike locally saves you the ferry crossing entirely.
