The Volkswagen Tiguan sits in the sweet spot of the family SUV market: more premium feel than a Ford Kuga or Kia Sportage, less expensive than a BMW X3. It's the choice of buyers who want a genuinely refined interior, solid build quality, and the reliability of the wider VW Group parts network. On the Isle of Wight, where many buyers want a car that can handle both school runs and the occasional more demanding drive, the Tiguan is a strong contender.

Which Generation?
Mk1 (2007–2016): The car that established the Tiguan's reputation. Available in 1.4 TSI petrol, 2.0 TSI petrol, 2.0 TDI diesel, and 4WD (4Motion). Now available at lower price points. The 2.0 TDI is common but has DPF concerns for IoW short-trip use. The 1.4 TSI is the pick for local driving.
Mk2 (2016–present): A significant upgrade. Better interior, more technology (optional digital cockpit, Active Info Display), and improved efficiency. Available as standard Tiguan, long-wheelbase Tiguan Allspace (7 seats), and as a plug-in hybrid (eHybrid). The 1.5 TSI petrol is efficient and punchy; the 2.0 TDI diesel suits motorway drivers who regularly cross to the mainland. The eHybrid (245bhp) is an excellent choice for IoW use.
eHybrid for the IoW?
The Tiguan eHybrid (plug-in hybrid) combines a 1.4 TSI petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined 245bhp and up to 30 miles of pure electric range (WLTP). For IoW buyers with home charging:
- Most island journeys covered on battery alone
- £30–50/month fuel bill rather than £150+
- Petrol engine available instantly for occasional mainland trips
- Qualifies for lower road tax (P11D value dependent)
A used Tiguan eHybrid is one of the most practical IoW vehicle purchases available at this size and price point.
What to Check
2.0 TDI diesel — DPF: As with other diesel VAG products, the DPF on short IoW journeys can clog over time. If buying a diesel Tiguan, ask about any DPF warning history. Diesels are better suited to buyers who regularly cross to the mainland and cover sustained higher-speed miles.
DSG gearbox service: The dual-clutch DSG automatic (common on Mk2 models) needs fluid changes every 40,000 miles. Skipped services cause rough low-speed engagement. Ask specifically about DSG service history.
Mk1 timing chain (1.4 TSI CAVD engine, pre-2011): Early 1.4 TSI engines had timing chain tensioner issues. This was largely addressed by an update, but ask an independent specialist to check on pre-2011 examples.
Panoramic sunroof drains: The optional panoramic roof has drainage channels that can block and cause water ingress. Check the headliner and carpet around the A and C pillars for any damp.
