BMW 5 Series for Sale on the Isle of Wight

The BMW 5 Series is the benchmark executive saloon — balanced driving dynamics, a well-crafted interior, and a level of on-road authority that few rivals match. On the Isle of Wight, where no motorway ever tests the 5 Series at its best, it's a car that earns its place through refinement on country roads, practical luggage capacity, and the prestige of the badge without the maintenance costs of a newer car. The correct generation to target, and the critical diesel engine issue to avoid, are the most important decisions for any prospective buyer.

Which Generation to Buy

G30 BMW 5 Series (2017–present): The current generation and the right choice. The G30 represents a substantial step up from the F10 — better iDrive infotainment, significantly improved ride quality, and the new B-series engine range (B47 diesel, B48 petrol) that addresses the timing chain concerns of the previous generation. Available from around £18,000 for early examples.

F10 BMW 5 Series (2010–2016): Now very affordable, but carries the N47 diesel timing chain problem (see below — this is critical) and some N20 petrol chain concerns. Worth buying only if you specifically avoid the problem engines and have verified the timing chain work has been done. Available from around £10,000.

For most buyers, the G30 is the correct choice. The lower price of an F10 must be weighed against the engine risks.

Critical: F10 N47 Diesel Timing Chain Warning

The BMW N47 diesel engine (fitted to most 520d and 525d F10 models) has a known catastrophic timing chain failure risk. The chain and tensioner can fail — particularly on higher-mileage examples or where oil change intervals were extended — with potentially engine-destroying results.

Signs of concern: Rattling on cold start from the rear of the engine, timing chain warning lights, increased oil consumption, visible chain slack.

If you're considering an F10 diesel (520d or 518d), the timing chain tensioner and guides should have been replaced. Ask for evidence of this work being done. The same issue affected the 3 Series N47 diesel — see our BMW 3 Series guide.

The B47 diesel in the G30 (2017+) does not have this problem. The B47 is the modern replacement engine with a far better reliability record.

Which Engine for IoW?

520d B47 (190bhp, diesel, G30): The recommended diesel for G30 buyers. The B47 is a modern, reliable diesel with good long-term reputation. Economy is 47–54mpg real-world. As always with diesel on the IoW, the DPF concern applies for short island trips — only choose diesel if you regularly cross to the mainland.

520i B48 (184bhp, petrol, G30): The recommended petrol for island buyers. The B48 is BMW's turbocharged four-cylinder — smooth, economical (35–42mpg), and reliable. No DPF. The better choice for buyers who do mostly island driving. The 530i (252bhp) adds useful performance.

F10 325d-equivalent (530d, diesel, if considering F10): If buying F10, the 530d uses the N57 inline-six diesel — a different, more reliable engine than the N47 four-cylinder used in 518d/520d. The N57 does not have the same timing chain concerns. More expensive but worth seeking out on F10 for diesel buyers.

Known Issues to Check

Timing chain (F10 N47 and some N20 petrol): Covered above — the most important issue on any F10. Listen for a rattle on cold start.

iDrive infotainment (F10): The CIC and NBT iDrive systems in F10s are functional but dated. Check the screen is clear (backlight failures occur), the HDMI/USB connections work, and the CD reader functions if used.

Air suspension (optional): Some 5 Series models were optioned with air suspension rather than the standard steel spring setup. Air suspension provides a superior ride but can develop compressor and air bag issues. If optioned, check for even ride height and no dashboard warning.

High-pressure fuel pump (N20 petrol, F10): Some F10 N20 petrol engines developed high-pressure fuel pump failures — symptom is difficulty starting or rough running. Check service history for any pump replacement.

Brake dust shield corrosion: A common minor issue on IoW cars — the thin metal shields corrode and rattle. Minor, but worth mentioning at negotiation.

BMW 5 Series vs Mercedes E-Class

BMW 5 Series (G30) Mercedes E-Class (W213)
Driving dynamics More driver-focused More comfort-oriented
Interior quality Excellent Excellent
Boot space 530 litres 540 litres
Rear legroom Very good Very good
Reliability Good (G30) Good (W213)
Running costs Similar Similar
IoW lane fit 1.87m wide (tight) 1.85m wide (tight)

Both are executive saloons at similar price points. The BMW is the driver's choice; the Mercedes is the passenger's choice. On the IoW, the distinction in driving enjoyment is real on the country roads south and west of the island.

IoW Buying Tips

At 4.90m long and 1.87m wide (G30), the 5 Series is one of the larger cars that island buyers commonly purchase. It fits standard UK parking bays, but the narrow lanes in rural IoW areas (Brighstone, Shorwell, Chale) need more patience than in a smaller car.

Executive car supply on the island is lower than mainstream hatchbacks — a handful of examples circulate at any given time. Company car histories are common — check MOT mileage consistency and ask for full dealer service history. Run an HPI check — finance agreements are very common on BMW.

Check MOT history at gov.uk/check-mot-history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the BMW 5 Series reliable?

The G30 (2017+) with B-series engines is reliable and represents a significant improvement over the F10. The F10 with the N47 diesel (520d, 518d) has a known timing chain failure risk that must be investigated before purchase. The F10 N57 six-cylinder diesel (530d) is more reliable. The G30 B47 diesel and B48 petrol are both well-regarded. Proper maintenance — oil changes at correct intervals, DSG fluid history — is important.

What is the BMW 5 Series N47 diesel problem?

The N47 four-cylinder diesel fitted to F10 520d and 518d models has a known timing chain and tensioner failure risk. The chain can snap catastrophically, typically resulting in severe engine damage that costs as much as or more than the car's value to repair. The problem is more common on higher-mileage examples where oil change intervals were extended. Listen for a rattle from the rear of the engine on cold start. The G30's B47 diesel replacement engine does not have this problem.

Is a BMW 5 Series worth buying for IoW roads?

Yes, if you want an executive car. The 5 Series' ride quality — particularly the G30 — is well-matched to the island's varied road surfaces. The country roads south of Newport to Ventnor and west towards Freshwater provide genuine driving satisfaction that a 5 Series rewards. At 4.90m it requires more care on narrow lanes, but the island's roads are navigable. Running costs are higher than a mainstream car — insurance, servicing, and parts cost more — so factor that into the total cost of ownership.

Should I buy a petrol or diesel BMW 5 Series on the Isle of Wight?

For island-only driving, petrol (520i, B48) is the safer choice — no DPF concerns, no risk of filter blockage from short-trip driving. The diesel makes sense only if you regularly cross to the mainland and cover longer distances, where the 520d B47's economy (47–54mpg) becomes financially meaningful. A 5 Series used mainly for Newport-to-Ryde driving will stress a diesel's DPF system unnecessarily.

How much does it cost to run a BMW 5 Series on the Isle of Wight?

More than a mainstream car. Insurance is typically £800–£1,500 per year depending on age, driving history, and trim level. Servicing at a BMW dealer is expensive — independent BMW specialists bring this to a more manageable level. Parts cost more than mainstream equivalents. Tyres (typically 225/50 R17 or larger) cost £100–£200 each at tyre centres on the island.
