Citroen C3 for Sale on the Isle of Wight

The Citroen C3 occupies an interesting niche in the small car market — it's not as sporty as a Renault Clio or as practical as a Volkswagen Polo, but it has a character of its own. The C3's emphasis on comfort over cornering makes it particularly well suited to Isle of Wight driving, where smooth progress on country lanes matters more than outright performance. It's also one of the more affordable small hatches to buy and run.

Which Generation to Choose

Second Generation (2009–2016) The most commonly found C3 on the island. Available in a wide range of engines including 1.0 VTi, 1.2 PureTech, and 1.6 HDi diesel. The 1.2 PureTech three-cylinder petrol is the standout — refined, efficient, and well-suited to IoW driving patterns. The 1.6 diesel suits higher mileage use but, like all small diesels, struggles with DPF issues if only used for short trips.

Third Generation (2016–present) A more distinctive design, with customisable panels and a taller, crossover-influenced body. Available primarily with the 1.2 PureTech engine in 82hp or 110hp forms. These are very reliable and cheap to run. The 110hp PureTech suits those who occasionally want more spirited progress on the island's A-roads.

Why the C3 Works Well on the IoW

  • Ride comfort: Citroen has always prioritised comfort over dynamics — the C3's suspension absorbs surface imperfections well, making it pleasant on the island's narrower rural roads
  • Low running costs: Small petrol engines are cheap to insure, fuel, and maintain — ideal for IoW buyers who cover modest annual mileage
  • Easy to park: The C3's compact dimensions make it effortless in Newport, Ryde, and Cowes where parking can be tight
  • Good value secondhand: The C3 depreciates well for buyers, making clean examples affordable without sacrificing equipment levels

Common Issues to Check

  • 1.2 PureTech timing belt (third gen, pre-2020): Early 1.2 PureTech engines (2016–2019) had reported timing belt problems. Post-2020 units had the issue addressed. Check for any service history of belt replacement and listen for any unusual noise on startup
  • Rust (second gen): Pre-2016 C3s can rust around the lower sills and rear wheel arches. On IoW examples, salt air accelerates this — inspect carefully
  • Electrical niggles (second gen): Infotainment and electric window switches can play up on higher-mileage second-gen examples
  • Automatic gearbox: The EGS 'automated manual' gearbox fitted to some models is notably jerky and not popular with buyers. If you want an automatic, look specifically for the later six-speed automatic on post-2016 models or stick to a manual

What to Pay on the Isle of Wight

  • Second gen (2009–2016): £4,000–£9,000 for a clean example
  • Third gen (2016+): £7,500–£14,000

IoW examples tend to have lower mileage than mainland equivalents, but check bodywork condition carefully — particularly on older cars — due to salt air exposure.

Salt Air Inspection

On any IoW example, check:

  • Lower sills and sill ends — prone to surface rust on older C3s
  • Rear wheel arch lips
  • Around the base of the A-pillars
  • Under the car — particularly on examples over ten years old
