Ford Kuga for Sale on the Isle of Wight

The Ford Kuga is the brand's answer to the Nissan Qashqai and Hyundai Tucson — a mid-size family SUV that balances practicality, comfort, and running costs. It's one of the UK's best-selling cars in its class and as a result secondhand examples are plentiful, parts are cheap, and any Ford dealer or independent mechanic can work on one. For Isle of Wight buyers looking for a spacious family SUV without paying a premium, the Kuga is worth serious consideration.

Which Generation to Choose

Mk1 (2008–2012) The original Kuga is quite different from later versions — narrower, more car-like in feel, and based on the Focus platform. Available with 2.0 TDCi diesel and 2.5 T petrol. These are now inexpensive secondhand but age is beginning to show on older examples. Check carefully for rust — sills and wheel arches are common problem areas.

Mk2 (2012–2019) A much larger, more practical vehicle than the Mk1. Available with 1.5 EcoBoost petrol, 2.0 EcoBoost petrol, 1.5 TDCi diesel, and 2.0 TDCi diesel. The 1.5 EcoBoost petrol is the pick for IoW buyers — avoids DPF issues and is manageable on the island's modest distances. The 2.0 TDCi diesel is efficient for higher mileage use but needs regular longer runs to keep the DPF clear.

The Mk2 also added a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant from 2017 — the Kuga PHEV — which is well suited to IoW conditions if you can charge at home.

Mk3 (2019–present) Significantly improved over the Mk2 in terms of interior quality and technology. The PHEV variant is more refined and offers up to 35 miles of electric range. These are newer and pricier secondhand but represent the better long-term buy.

Why the Kuga Works on the Isle of Wight

  • Practical size: The Kuga's boot is large enough for the weekly shop, pushchair, and dog without being unwieldy to park in Newport or Ryde
  • PHEV for IoW: The plug-in hybrid version suits IoW driving very well — most journeys on the island are under 20 miles, well within electric range if charged overnight
  • Parts availability: As a Ford, parts are widely available and inexpensive. Any mechanic on the island can service a Kuga
  • Ride quality: The Kuga's relatively comfortable ride handles the island's variable road surfaces well

Common Issues to Check

  • 1.5 EcoBoost petrol (Mk2): The 1.5 EcoBoost engine has a known coolant leak issue on some builds. Check for any history of coolant consumption or engine temperature warnings
  • EcoBoost carbon build-up: Direct-injection petrol engines can accumulate carbon on inlet valves over time. A walnut blast clean resolves it but adds cost — ask if it has been done
  • DPF (diesel): Kuga diesels used mainly for short IoW trips are at risk of DPF blockage. The 1.5 TDCi needs occasional longer runs to regenerate — if the car is used purely for local errands, petrol or PHEV is a better choice
  • Rust (Mk1 and early Mk2): Pre-2015 examples can develop rust around the rear wheel arches and on sills. Salt air on the IoW accelerates this — inspect carefully
  • PHEV battery health (Mk2 and Mk3): Ask for the electric range on a full charge. Significant degradation (under 20 miles) can indicate battery aging, though PHEV batteries generally last well

What to Pay on the Isle of Wight

  • Mk1 (2008–2012): £3,500–£7,000
  • Mk2 petrol/diesel (2012–2019): £7,000–£15,000
  • Mk2 PHEV (2017–2019): £10,000–£17,000
  • Mk3 (2019+): £15,000–£28,000

PHEV examples command a premium but offer genuinely lower fuel costs for IoW buyers who can charge at home.

Salt Air Inspection

On any IoW example:

  • Rear wheel arch lips — particularly on Mk1 and early Mk2
  • Sill ends and lower sills
  • Around the tailgate aperture
  • Underbody on older examples
