The Ford Ka is the budget-end classic of the Isle of Wight's used car market. Compact, cheap to insure, simple to run, and easy to park in tight Newport side streets — it's exactly the car the island's road network suits. For first-time buyers, those on limited budgets, or anyone who needs a reliable second vehicle without high running costs, the Ka is a pragmatic choice.

Ka1 vs Ka+ — Which Generation?
Ka (Mk1, 1996–2008): The original, curvy Ka — Ford's small city car built on the Fiesta platform. The 1.3 petrol is the only meaningful engine choice. Simple, bulletproof mechanicals mean it's cheap to maintain. These are now 15–25 years old and condition varies enormously. At this age, service history and bodywork condition matter more than mileage.
Ka+ (Mk2, 2016–2021): The modern Ka — larger, more practical, and built on the same platform as the Fiat 500. The 1.2 petrol is the standard engine; a 1.5 TDCi diesel was offered (unusual for a car this size) but the petrol is the better choice for IoW short trips. The Ka+ has five proper doors, which the original Ka lacked. Better safety ratings, modern infotainment, and more interior space than the original.
Is the Ka Right for IoW Life?
Yes, if your priorities are:
- Low running costs: The 1.2 petrol Ka+ averages 55–60mpg on island routes; road tax is minimal.
- Easy parking: Compact enough for every car park and street in Newport, Ryde, Cowes, and Ventnor.
- Low insurance: Group 2–5 insurance on most Ka variants — ideal for young or newly-passed drivers.
- Low purchase price: A decent Ka+ is available for £3,000–£7,000, making it one of the most affordable modern used cars available.
Where it's less ideal: long motorway runs (it's not a relaxed cruiser), carrying more than three adults comfortably, or towing anything.
What to Check
Mk1 Ka rust: Older Ka models have significant rust potential around the sills, rear arches, and floor. On an island car that's seen salt air, this is the biggest concern. Always look underneath — some examples are excellent, others are structural write-offs hiding behind fresh paint.
Mk2 Ka+ infotainment: Some early Ka+ infotainment units were glitchy. Check the touchscreen responds well and that DAB radio / Bluetooth pairing works.
Mk2 Ka+ diesel: The 1.5 TDCi was offered but was never a great fit for a small city car. The diesel needs sustained miles to keep the DPF healthy — not what IoW town driving provides. Avoid the diesel unless the car has clearly been used for regular longer trips.
Clutch wear (both generations): Town-stop-start driving in Newport wears clutches faster than motorway use. Feel for slip or judder — easy to check during the test drive.
