Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV for Sale on the Isle of Wight

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) has been one of the most successful plug-in hybrids in the UK, and it enjoys particular popularity on the Isle of Wight. The reason is straightforward: with 28–35 miles of pure electric range (depending on battery age and version), it covers virtually every journey a resident makes on the island without burning any petrol at all. Then, when the occasional mainland ferry trip calls for sustained motorway driving, the petrol engine provides effortless range.

Why the Outlander PHEV Suits IoW Life So Well

Electric range vs IoW journeys: The Outlander PHEV can cover 28–35 miles on electric power alone. The longest practical journey on the Isle of Wight — coast to coast — is around 23 miles. This means:

  • Newport to Cowes: 8 miles — fully electric
  • Newport to Ventnor: 12 miles — fully electric
  • Newport to Yarmouth: 13 miles — fully electric
  • Newport to Ryde: 12 miles — fully electric
  • A typical day of island driving: 20–30 miles — fully or mostly electric

With home charging (standard 3-pin or a dedicated 7kW wallbox), the battery charges overnight and you effectively never use petrol for everyday island use.

Seven seats: The Outlander is a genuine seven-seater. For island families who occasionally need to carry everyone — or for school runs — this is a significant practical advantage over alternatives.

4WD: All PHEV Outlanders have four-wheel drive — useful for the Isle of Wight's rural lanes after winter weather or for those with gravel driveways.

Which Year to Buy?

2014–2018 (Mk1 PHEV): The first generation — still excellent but showing age. Electric range was officially 32 miles from new; real-world used examples with battery degradation may deliver 22–28 miles. Widely available, now well under £15,000 for good examples.

2018–2021 (Mk2 PHEV, facelift): Updated styling, improved battery management, and slightly better range. Still uses the same core drivetrain. The sweet spot for value vs range. More common on the market than the original.

2021–2023 (Mk3 facelift): Further improvements including an updated engine and larger battery option (2.4 engine version). Better range and more technology. Prices higher but justified for the improved real-world electric performance.

What to Check

Battery range degradation: The most important check on any used PHEV. Ask the seller to show you the battery charge level and do a test drive that includes some electric-only driving. A genuine 25+ miles of electric range is acceptable; if it drops below 20 miles, the battery is degraded. An Outlander PHEV specialist (or a Mitsubishi dealer) can run a battery health check.

Charging equipment: Make sure the car comes with its Type 1 charging cable. The original Outlander PHEV uses a Type 1 socket (not Type 2 like most newer PHEVs). Ensure you have or can obtain the correct cable for home charging.

Brake discs: PHEV cars use regenerative braking heavily, which means the friction brakes are used less. This can cause corrosion on brake discs from lack of use — they can look seized or glazed. Check and budget for replacement if needed.

Service history: PHEV systems benefit from full Mitsubishi service history. Non-specialist serviced examples may have had software updates missed.

Is PHEV vs Full Electric Right for the IoW?

For most IoW residents, the Outlander PHEV hits a practical sweet spot:

  • Electric for all island driving
  • Petrol engine for stress-free ferry trips to the mainland
  • No range anxiety: you're never stuck without charge
  • Well-priced on the used market

Versus a pure electric SUV (e.g., Kia EV6, VW ID.4), the Outlander is cheaper to buy used and eliminates mainland range anxiety — but its technology is older and overall efficiency lower. It remains the pragmatic island choice.
