The Renault Zoe has been one of the UK's most popular electric cars since its launch in 2013. It's compact, practical for a small family, well-equipped, and — thanks to Renault's focus on making EVs affordable — relatively accessible secondhand. For Isle of Wight buyers who want the low running costs and simplicity of an electric car without committing to a premium price, the Zoe is one of the most compelling options available.

Why the Isle of Wight Is Perfect for Zoe Ownership
Electric cars suit the IoW better than almost anywhere else in the UK. Here's why the Zoe works particularly well:
- Short journeys: The Zoe's 190–245 miles of real-world range (ZE 50 version) comfortably covers any realistic IoW daily routine. Even the older R90 with 145 miles of range handles island distances with ease
- Low average speeds: Electric motors are most efficient at lower speeds — exactly the kind of motoring the IoW requires. A Zoe covering 5,000 miles at 35mph average is vastly more efficient than one doing motorway miles
- Home charging: Most Zoe owners charge overnight at home on a 7kW wallbox. On a small island with generally shorter trips, you may not need to use public chargers at all
- No DPF, no oil, no clutch: The Zoe's electric drivetrain requires minimal maintenance compared to petrol or diesel alternatives
Which Version to Choose
R240 / Q90 / R90 (2013–2019) — Original Battery The first generation of Zoe used either a 22kWh or 41kWh battery. Real-world range: 80–100 miles (22kWh) or 130–150 miles (41kWh).
Important: early Zoes were sold with a battery lease arrangement rather than battery ownership. Always check whether the battery is included in the purchase price or on a monthly lease — this is the single most important thing to verify. Battery-owned examples are now common and preferable.
ZE 50 (2019–present) — 52kWh Battery A significant upgrade. The ZE 50 gives 190–240 miles of real-world range, faster charging (50kW CCS rapid), and a more modern interior. These are the version to buy if budget allows — they offer genuinely stress-free range for any IoW journey.
Battery Lease vs Battery Owned
This is unique to older Renault Zoes and is critical:
- Battery leased: Renault (or FlexEVs) owns the battery. You pay a monthly fee (typically £49–£79/month depending on mileage). The upside is Renault guarantees battery performance. The downside is an ongoing monthly cost.
- Battery purchased: The buyer owns the battery outright. No monthly fee. These are more desirable and slightly more expensive to buy secondhand.
All ZE 50 (2019+) models sold new in the UK were battery-owned. Many earlier Zoes have been battery-purchased retrospectively from Renault.
Before buying any pre-2019 Zoe, confirm whether the battery is owned or leased.
Common Issues to Check
- Battery lease status: As above — verify before committing to buy
- Battery State of Health: Like any EV, the battery degrades over time. A healthy Zoe battery should still deliver 80%+ of its original range. Ask for a battery health report or have it checked with Renault diagnostics
- CCS vs Chademo vs Type 2: Older Zoes may only support Type 2 AC charging (no rapid DC charging). The ZE 50 adds CCS rapid charging (50kW), which allows much faster top-ups at public chargers. Know what charging standard your potential Zoe supports
- Heat pump: Some ZE 50 models come with a heat pump (more efficient cabin heating in winter). Check if fitted — it's worth having for maximum winter range
- Rust (2013–2017 examples): Older Zoes are now over a decade old. IoW salt air can affect sills and lower arches — inspect these on older examples
Charging on the Isle of Wight
Home charging on a 7kW wallbox will fully charge a ZE 50 in under 8 hours — overnight from empty.
For public charging, the IoW has a growing network at:
- Newport car parks
- Ryde seafront
- Wightlink terminal (East Cowes)
- Hotels and retail parks across the island
Check the Zap-Map app for real-time charger availability across the IoW.
Zoe vs Nissan Leaf
The Zoe and Leaf are the two most common electric hatchbacks on the secondhand market. Key differences:
- Zoe is slightly smaller — better for parking in tight IoW spots
- Leaf has a larger boot
- ZE 50 Zoe's CCS charging is faster at public chargers than the older Leaf's Chademo
- Leaf has Nissan's ProPilot semi-autonomous driving on second-gen models
- Battery lease (on older Zoes) is unique to Renault — check carefully
Both are excellent IoW choices. Budget and available stock will often determine which you end up with.
What to Pay on the Isle of Wight
- Original R90 / 41kWh (2016–2019): £6,000–£11,000
- ZE 50 (2019+): £10,000–£19,000
Battery-owned examples command a premium over leased ones. Check what you're buying.
Salt Air Inspection
Even on a modern EV:
- Check lower sills and sill ends on older models
- Rear wheel arch lips on pre-2019 examples
- Around the charging port — check for any damage or moisture ingress
