Toyota Aygo for Sale on the Isle of Wight

The Toyota Aygo shares its platform and engine with the Citroën C1 and Peugeot 107/108 — but Toyota's build quality and reliability record makes it the most desirable of the three. For Isle of Wight buyers who need a small, cheap-to-run car for island journeys (most of which are under 15 miles), the Aygo is close to the ideal solution. Running costs are among the lowest of any car on sale, the footprint is tiny, and the 1.0 VVT-i engine is one of the most reliable in the small car class.

Which Generation to Buy

Mk1 Aygo (2005–2014): The original model, shared with Citroën C1 and Peugeot 107. Simple, robust, and now very affordable. The 1.0 engine is the same unit carried into the Mk2. Available under £3,000 in good condition with reasonable mileage. The main concerns are age-related rust and high mileage.

Mk2 Aygo (2014–2022): A significant redesign with a more distinctive exterior, better safety equipment, and an updated interior. The signature X-shaped front grille makes the Mk2 visually unmistakeable. Available from £5,000–£9,000 for clean examples with documented history. The better choice for most buyers.

Aygo X (2022–present): Toyota's replacement for the Aygo — now a mini-crossover rather than a traditional city car. Different character to the original; higher and with a more SUV-like stance. Very few available used at time of writing; prices start around £14,000.

Which Engine?

There is effectively one engine choice across all Aygo generations: the 1.0 VVT-i three-cylinder petrol (68–72bhp depending on specification).

This simplicity is a strength. The 1.0 VVT-i has an outstanding reliability record — few moving parts, no turbocharger to fail, no timing belt (chain-driven), and a design that has been in production for decades. It's not quick, but it's virtually maintenance-free beyond regular oil changes.

For island driving — short trips, low speeds, parking in Newport, getting around Cowes — it's perfectly matched.

What about diesel or hybrid? The Aygo has never been offered with a diesel or hybrid drivetrain. Its petrol engine is so light and efficient (50–55mpg real-world) that neither was necessary.

Known Issues to Check

Oil consumption (high mileage): On very high-mileage examples (100,000+), some Aygos develop mild oil consumption. Check the dipstick at viewing and ask if the owner tops up between services.

Rust (Mk1): Mk1 Aygos (2005–2014) are now old enough for rust to be a genuine concern on island-kept examples. Check door bottoms, sill seams, and wheel arches carefully.

Rust (Mk2): The Mk2 is better protected, but island salt air still requires checking the lower body panels and underside on older examples.

Air conditioning (if fitted): Many entry-level Aygos were sold without air conditioning. Check if it's fitted, and test it at viewing. Regassing (if needed) costs £60–£80.

Clutch (manual): High urban mileage wears the clutch faster than highway miles. Test for slipping on a slight incline.

Infotainment: The Mk2 x-touch infotainment system is functional but not modern. Don't expect Apple CarPlay — it's not available on Aygo unless fitted as an aftermarket addition.

Why the Aygo Suits Island Life

Tiny footprint: At 3.46m long, the Aygo is one of the shortest road cars sold in the UK. Newport's car parks, Cowes' narrow streets, Ventnor's steep lanes — the Aygo handles all of these with no stress.

Cheap to insure: Most Aygo variants sit in insurance groups 1–5 — the lowest available. For young island drivers or those looking to minimise insurance costs, the Aygo is one of the cheapest cars to insure in the country.

Low running costs: 50–55mpg real-world, service intervals every 10,000 miles or annually, and very low parts costs. Total annual running cost (excluding insurance and depreciation) is typically under £600 for a well-maintained Aygo.

Easy to park: The short wheelbase and good visibility make the Aygo easy to park in any space. The turning circle is excellent.

Aygo vs Citroën C1 vs Peugeot 108

All three share the same platform and engine. The differences are:

Toyota Aygo Citroën C1 Peugeot 108
Reliability reputation Highest High High
Resale value Best Good Good
Interior quality Similar Similar Similar
Convertible option No Yes (C1 Airspace VTi) No
Price used Slightly higher Slightly lower Similar

The Toyota badge commands a small premium in the used market — but the premium reflects both the reliability reputation and stronger resale values, which partly cancel out at point of sale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Toyota Aygo reliable?

Yes — the Aygo is among the most reliable small cars sold in the UK. The 1.0 VVT-i engine has an exceptional record with very few known failure points. Toyota's dealer network servicing keeps the car in good condition between owners. On the island, where access to specialist garages is limited, the Aygo's simplicity is a genuine advantage — any mechanic can service it.

Is the Toyota Aygo a good first car?

Very good. Low insurance groups (1–5), cheap fuel costs, and a small size that builds driving confidence make the Aygo one of the best first car choices available. On the Isle of Wight specifically, the tight roads and limited parking of Newport and Cowes suit the Aygo's compact footprint. Budget for slightly higher insurance as a new driver, but even young driver premiums on a group 1 Aygo are significantly lower than on larger cars.

What is the difference between the Toyota Aygo and Aygo X?

The original Aygo (2005–2022) is a traditional city car — low, light, and extremely economical. The Aygo X (2022+) is a mini crossover — taller, with a raised ride height and slightly more SUV-like appearance. The Aygo X doesn't share the same platform as the old car; it uses a new Toyota architecture. The original Aygo is cheaper to run and insure; the Aygo X is newer and more modern-feeling.

Is the Toyota Aygo good for IoW road trips?

For purely island use, the Aygo is excellent. For occasional mainland trips it's less suited to motorway speeds — the 1.0 engine is comfortable at 60–70mph but becomes noticeably strained above that. For ferry trips to Portsmouth or Southampton followed by motorway driving, a slightly larger car (Yaris, Fiesta) is more relaxed. If all your driving is on the island, the Aygo is perfectly capable.

How much does it cost to run a Toyota Aygo per year?

For a typical island driver covering 6,000–8,000 miles annually: fuel at 55mpg costs approximately £500–£650/year at current prices. Annual service is £100–£160 at an independent. Road tax is low (£180–£200/year for most Mk2 variants). Insurance depends heavily on age and history, but averages around £300–£600 for experienced drivers. Total running costs (excluding insurance and depreciation) are typically £800–£1,200/year — among the lowest of any car sold in the UK.
